STUDENT CASE STUDY

Sophomore & Senior Sisters Conquer Their Fears of Math

Background

Alex was a senior who came to us in need of some support in her math classes – specifically, statistics. She was matched with one of our Premium Tutors, with whom she developed a very supportive ongoing relationship. As she moved through her high school math classes and into college, Alex had concerns about college statistics and worked closely with her Applerouth tutor until she felt more confident. She did well and passed her stat class!

Chloe, Alex’s sophomore sister, also struggled with math. Seeing Alex’s success, Chloe ended up working with that same tutor throughout her high school math courses. Chloe also continued working with the tutor into her college years, and had similar success with her college-level math classes. We saw both sisters ask for help when they needed it, nip those problem areas in the bud before getting overwhelmed, and overcome their discomforts with math altogether.

Approach

  • Alex was having a hard time with statistics, so she sought tutoring help with Applerouth. We paired her up with a supportive math expert who gave her personalized guidance to tackle all her doubts.
  • Her tutor focused on building up Alex’s self-belief, which is key to conquering academic anxiety.
  • Her younger sister Chloe saw first-hand the benefits of reaching out for help with math anxiety, so she ended up using the same tutor! They worked with this tutor throughout their high school years, and were able to gain more and more self-confidence as they progressed through the grades.
  • Alex and Chloe both utilized our tutor’s continued support in college in order to have a smooth transition and continued success. This is a great show of self-awareness; they both knew that they would reach success more quickly by stopping the anxiety and uncertainty they were having in their math subjects before it could grow too much.

Outcome

Alex and Chloe both excelled academically in high school and sought support for college-level statistics, showing a great example of how that openness to getting some guidance can inspire those around them to reach out before feeling overwhelmed.
