STUDENT CASE STUDY

The Power of Seeking Help, and Inspiring Others to Do the Same

Background

A high school student named Anthony was having difficulties in Vector Calculus. This is an intense class that's unique to his school. His parents reached out, and we paired him with an Applerouth tutor who had worked with students on that particular course. She empathized with the challenging nature of the class, validating him in his feelings of doubt. She then worked with Anthony to find practical ways he could improve the way he related to the material, empowering him to remove the self-doubt he was feeling and find success with the class.

After seeing his progress with this class, three of Anthony’s soccer teammates reached out to his tutor. They, too, had been struggling with the same class, and worked with this tutor to find ways to simplify the intimidating topic. The teammates found that the class became less of a weight on their shoulders now they weren’t carrying it on their own. These students had success with that particular course just like Anthony, leaving space for them to focus more on the rest of their daily demands. This shows how being open to help can truly make all the difference in not just one student’s workload, but those around them, too.

Approach

  • Anthony was having a hard time with a particularly difficult class that is unique to his school. His parents contacted us, and we matched Anthony with the best tutor to help him through this coursework.
  • Anthony worked hard with his tutor to gain an understanding of what this class was demanding, and what his teacher was looking for from him.
  • This motivated some of his peers – three of his soccer teammates – to reach out to us.
  • They too were successful, which demonstrated how contagious self-belief can be. Anthony’s friends saw that there was another way, and that they didn’t have to suffer the stress of not understanding the class material. It doesn’t just benefit one student to rise above their challenges – sometimes it can benefit multiple students from one class!

Outcome

Anthony gained a new level of comprehension in Vector Calculus, a class that was intimidating many of his peers. Other students in his class ended up working with the same tutor, and having similar success as Anthony. This emphasizes the positive ripple effect one student can have when they conquer their challenges.
