Wendie Lubic: The College Lady

Most people in the Washington, DC area know me from the parenting classes I have been leading since 1996 for the Parent Encouragement Program in Kensington, MD. As the mom and stepmom of 4, and a former professor at American University, I really relate well to teens and young adults. As my own children made the transition to college, I realized that no matter where I was, at parties or walking the dog, people were asking me about college admissions. When I started my business, I decided to call myself "the College Lady" because that is what my clients call me when they tell their friends about their appointments.
My emphasis is on reducing the stress and anxiety that have become a part of the college application process. Having accurate, up-to-date information is so valuable because advance planning is an important part of college admissions. I also feel strongly that the student should be in charge of the application process, and consultants and parents can play an important role by supporting the student's efforts, and broadening their horizons. By empowering the student, I can help families make the transition in a happier way, so parents and teens can enjoy one another rather than arguing about essays and timelines.
A big part of my practice is incorporating social interest... I am happy to answer questions, even from folks who are not my clients. I believe that disseminating good information helps all of us, and in the long run that is what is most important. I have a colleague who specializes in investing for college, and together we present to groups of parents at no charge.
